Quote of the week
What I'm reading
"Mindset - Updated Edition: Changing The Way You think To Fulfil Your Potential" by Dr Carol Dweck. For anyone keen to get started on the topic of resilience, this book is one of the most comprehensive introductions out there. I like that Dr Dweck doesn't simply tell anyone to "bounce back", choosing instead to focus on how resilient mindsets are recognised, trained, and nurtured.
"The Icarus Deception: How High Will You Fly?" by Seth Godin. There's a good bit about "grit" in this book - not one of Godin's easiest, but with an urgency which still rings true today. One of the best opening sections I've ever read, and even leafing through the book always packs a powerful motivating punch.
"What I Talk About When I Talk About Running" by Haruki Murakami. For the runner in your life. For the cabin-fever-stricken runner in your head. For the joy, and the pain, of running.
(Please, note: if you go ahead and buy a book using one of the links above, youโre supporting a non-Amazon bookshop, and I may get a percentage of the sale. You donโt pay any extra though.)
What I'm hearing
"Salute to the Sun" by Matthew Halsall. Soothing, clever, and unrushed, but with plenty of beauty to enjoy in every minute. Lockdown jazz at its best.
"Sian" by Sian. It's Burns night when I'm typing this, so here's a Hebridean treat. Sian are a Gaelic female trio, celebrating the creative contributions of women to Gaelic music. The album and the virus both came out in March 2020...this one deserves to be heard much more widely.
"All Out 80s" by various artists. OK, if you grew up in my part of the world, this is a GOOD 80s playlist.
Elsewhere online...
"The Resilience Paradox: Why We Often Get Resilience Wrong" (Psychology Today / Brock Bastian). Thought-provoking, if nothing else. It's difficult to always prescribe a foolproof resilience recipe.
"How Many Microcovids Would You Spend on a Burrito?" (Wired / Gregory Barber). A long, nerdy, delightful read. What happens when a house full of data-obsessed engineers tries to use statistics to help their COVID decisions?
Freebies, deals, and offers
"Vegan starter kit", a free PETA resource pack. Good for all year round, not just for Veganuary.
"Start Something New by Chronicle Books" - 8 days left on this Humble Bundle as of 21 Jan 2021. Plenty of hobby ideas and some cookery, but let's face it, you're buying it for "Field Guide to Dumb Birds of North America".
This week's premium post: a sneak preview
Resilience is the main topic of this week's Friday premium post. Bouncing back is valuable. It is all the hype. It is also, far too often, oversold and undertrained.
Can you master your own resilience? Most researchers agree that it takes conscious, dedicated practice to build gritty habits. This week's post will explore the questions you can start asking to "bounce back" on your own terms.
There will be a free infographic to come with this week's post! Preview below.
Currently it's full of lorem ipsum - sign up today to get the actual wording in Friday's post :)
Have a great week, everyone -
